Universal Soldier Monument – IR

Universal Soldier Monument, Battery Park 2009

I should just let the picture speak for itself.
But I record my thoughts here as well.   The war monuments in Battery Park
go back ages.   Yes, the  victors get to  write
the history, but they also get to create the  monuments.
Without these monuments,
without well-crafted requiems, all that’s left
is sacrifice and insanity.

  1. The design commemorates the precise moment of the cessation of hostilities between the US and Korea. Acting as a sundial, at 10am every July 22nd, the sun shines directly through the soldier’s head to illuminate a commemorative plaque nearby. Around the monument are the flags and the number of dead and wounded from the nations involved in the Korean conflict.

One wonders what sort of monuments we’ll see coming out of five years of U.S.occupation of Iraq. Perhaps a statue of Bush and Cheney as conjoined twins in hunting gear poised victoriously over a slain moose with the face of Saddam Hussein.

    Lester, you kill me!
